INTRODUCTION TO ARABIC NUMBERS

This article provides a basic introduction to Arabic numbers, as well as how to write Arabic numbers in words or in English text.

The history of Arabic numbers has long been intertwined with the mathematics of the Arabs.

After all, Arabic numerals are the numerical symbols that were introduced to Europe by Muslim mathematicians in the 10th century, and they replaced the cumbersome Roman numerals that had been in use up to that time.

In this article, we'll take a closer look at how Arabic numbers evolved and how they're used today.

THE ORIGINS OF ARABIC NUMBERS

As we mentioned earlier, the introduction of Arabic numerals to Europe by Muslim mathematicians in the 10th century marked a significant advancement in mathematics. But where did these numerals originate?

The origins of Arabic numbers are actually unclear. Some historians believe that they were derived from Hindu numerals, which were introduced to Arab traders and mathematicians in the 8th century.

Other historians argue that Arabic numerals were actually developed independently of Hindu numerals.

No matter which theory is correct, it's clear that the introduction of Arabic numerals revolutionized mathematics and made complex calculations much easier.

Today, they remain an integral part of mathematical thinking all over the world.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARABIC NUMBERS AND ENGLISH NUMBERS

Arabic numbers are written from right to left and have unique symbols for the numbers one through nine.

In contrast, English numbers are written left to right and use the same symbols as Roman numerals. The symbol for zero is the same as in English.

To write numbers greater than nine in Arabic, one writes the number and then " ً" (nun), which means "and" in English. So, for instance, the number 12 would be written as "12 ً".

Numbers in parentheses indicate the ordinal number, so for instance "الأول" (al-awwal) is the first, "الثاني" (al-thani) is the second, and so on.

Ordinal numbers are written with an "al" ( ), followed by the appropriate number. For instance, "الأول" (al-awwal) is the first, "الثاني" (al-thani) is the second, and so on.

The symbol for multiplication is " × ".

The symbol for division is "/".
